"Self-sufficiency does not mean 'going back' to the acceptance of a lower standard of living. On the contrary, it is the striving for a higher standard of living, for food that is organically grown and good, for the good life in pleasant surroundings... and for the satisfaction that comes from doing difficult and intricate jobs well and successfully." John Seymour ~ Self Sufficiency 2003

Oh, I could have some fun...

... with this.

Can you imagine what you could do with this?
+/- 160 kms from New York City - as the crow flies
A sanctuary for animals, a productive retirement place for homeless people / ex-servicemen who have fallen on hard times, a centre teaching (potentially soon to be) long lost arts / crafts, or a communal weekend farming centre for schoolchildren / town dwellers, even a place of agrarian learning (with actual food production) for (electronically tagged) people who have committed non-violent misdemeanours / fraud / theft, instead of plonking them unproductively in jail...

My imagination is flying lol

If only I had $800 000.00 (and I lived in America)

That's one of the things I love about 1st World countries - the history of places, and the infinite possibilities with undiscovered (and still 100% recyclable / re-purpose-able) items from days of yore...

  1. Wow----what a place. Some of those buildings (oh-that barn--SWOON!)
I agree---it has so many possibilities.
    I'm thinking private retreat---specialty rental.
Your ideas are fantastic as well---but scary to an introvert like myself.
Have a wonderful week--and thanks for sharing that gem!

    1. Quinn - Bwahahaha - I don't have $800 000, plus I am too old to start something that big, and in another country - especially when I don't have a valid passport...

  3. What a fantastic opportunity for the person who buys it, I love the old mill at the end of the video.

    1. Dawn - Agreed - create electricity with it / grind flour - whatever. I'm amazed at the tidiness of the place - the lawns are mowed, can't see any weeds - obviously the buildings need a good scrape, and repaint...

      (sigh)

  4. oh Dani - you and i are so on the same page when it comes to this property! the bones of most of the buildings are solid and could easily be fixed up and be in use right away! i have always wanted to provide a place for people and animals who are unwanted/homeless - a place that was safe and warm and would provide shelter and food for those who chose to come. and then build a community with those people and animals. it would be wonderful. i imagine if i had 800,000 then i would probably have at least another 100,000 for fixing it all up - homeless people and unwanted animals usually don't care if the kitchen has granite tiles - they'd just be happy to have a kitchen! and now, if i had 900,000 then that probably means i have another 200,000 for inviting in guest speakers and specialists who could teach us all about the old skills and the best farming techniques, etc. lastly, if i had 1.1 million bucks then it probably means i have at least another few hundred thousand to buy everyone clothes and a bunch of preps. hmmmm.....wouldn't it be nice?

oh and i would definitely spend some of those thousands on getting you and your family passports and flying you all over for a visit, or to live with us, and of course i would fly you all in business class.

    sending much love! your friend,
    kymber
(p.s. - the picquante and bird's eye chili peppers will be moved to the greenhouse on friday. i will take a pic of them and put it on our blog! do you want me to send you some lupin seeds? they are beautiful flowers, attract all kinds of pollinators and can survive happily in crappy, dry, rocky, clay soil. look them up and let me know if you want some.)

    1. kymber - Oh, I know - $800 000 is not enough. But, it could be a start :) I didn't want to depress myself by going into the additional funds that would be required - but there again, some of those "tagged" felons would have to put in their hard days' work... ;)

Can;t wait to see veggies from my garden growing in yours :)

  5. Wow, that is awesome. OK, we're here in the states of course but DON'T have 800k by any means, ha. But man, that has such potential. I think an awesome combination of a retreat and a education center focusing on self sustaining lifestyle topics would be nice....ah we can dream right?

  6. Just the fact that someone wants to preserve it is fantastic. So many things get torn down because they are too old or out of date. I don't always get why newer or more modern is better. I notice that the $800,000 is just the starting bid!

    1. Leigh - Yeah - but, thinking positively, IF I was going to make an offer, I would get it for the $800 000 asking price. I would. I would....

      LOL

Thank you for taking the time to comment - it makes my day and removes the "loneliness' of sitting at my screen blogging supposedly to myself ;) I try and reply as quickly as possible so please forgive me if sometimes my response is delayed.
