"Self-sufficiency does not mean 'going back' to the acceptance of a lower standard of living. On the contrary, it is the striving for a higher standard of living, for food that is organically grown and good, for the good life in pleasant surroundings... and for the satisfaction that comes from doing difficult and intricate jobs well and successfully." Advanced fire info

As we head into summer, veld fires become a worry for all those rural landowners, and we're no different.

I follow the Greater Overberg FPA facebook page - and today they came out right at the top.  They gave a link to Advanced Fire Information Services website - http://www.afis.co.za/#

After registering on the AFIS site - which was hassle free - I can now access fire information in our area.

What a relief!  Forewarned is forearmed.

They seem to offer the fire warning service worldwide, but I'm only focusing on our part of this planet - naturally lol.

I will definitely be checking this at least twice a day until the end of the fire season / for the rest of summer...!

  1. Thanks for that Dani, really useful. It's so dry, my 200l rain barrel is already empty and the wind!

    1. possumqueensa - Yeah, that is why we have just installed another 2 X 5 000lt rainwater tanks. In the heat, 5000lts doesn't go far...

Plus, if necessary, an extra 40 000ltrs-odd would come in very handy for fighting a fire ;)

  2. Clearly I am severely under resourced in the water department.

  3. You're probably right, it's not like it's going to go bad or anything. I am glad I didn't buy a house with a thatch roof, those pictures of the Thiessen Island fire haunt me to this day.

    1. Oops - sorry, I must've deleted these comments from my e-mail programme before I answered them. Yeah I'm also glad we don't have a thatch roof!

  4. Is it just me are the hot dry winds worse this year. Everything is drying out far too quickly.

    1. Simone - Your comment was deleted too - strange - I've never done that before - ever...?

The wind is terrible - and that is where mulch also helps to retain whatever water is fed to plants / trees.

  5. good to be forewarned of veld fires. I follow the Volunteer fire fighters on FB.

    1. Diana - That sounds excellent. I doubt that there is a volunteer fire fighting group here though - farmers all tend to muck in and help neighbours automatically. Perhaps that's because we don't have a large fire station - our (single) fire engine is so antiquated - almost to the point of being useless...!

Thank you for taking the time to comment - it makes my day and removes the "loneliness' of sitting at my screen blogging supposedly to myself ;) I try and reply as quickly as possible so please forgive me if sometimes my response is delayed.
