"Self-sufficiency does not mean 'going back' to the acceptance of a lower standard of living. On the contrary, it is the striving for a higher standard of living, for food that is organically grown and good, for the good life in pleasant surroundings... and for the satisfaction that comes from doing difficult and intricate jobs well and successfully." The ripples in the water...

... spread out further...

As I mentioned in my post of 29th February, I have some wonderful news to share with you all.  Actually, there are two things...

They both have to do, firstly with NGirl, MKid and WGuy - we are travelling up to the farm next week (8th - 11th March) in order for, amongst other things, to afford WGuy the opportunity of formally asking RMan for NGirl's hand in marriage.  They are planning on getting married on the 11th May this year.  RMan, RSon and I will be flying up to Johannesburg for the wedding, and to look after MKid whilst the newlyweds take a short honeymoon.

It is, and has been, difficult and frustrating to fulfil my maternal role at this stage of my daughter's life, due to the distance between Cape Town and Johannesburg.  There are so many things that a mother and daughter do in the planning of her wedding – such as helping her choose the material for her dress, and the dressmaker, sourcing a venue for the reception and visiting it to confirm it's suitability, or even arranging for the flowers has not been feasible.  I am grateful to WGuy’s mother that she has been able to fill my shoes in this regard.  We are all so incredibly excited about the occasion - we are absolutely over the moon, and very, very happy for our daughter, and I, personally, and I can’t wait to welcome my future son-in-law into our family.

I am also proud that both NGirl and WGuy are being so very sensible and are not going overboard on their wedding, but are rather keeping it intimate and exquisitely simple, and are putting any excess funds they have into their future lives together.  RMan and I did the same - in fact we only went on our honeymoon after 12 years of marriage.  For although it is the most special day (especially in a female) life, to go into debt at the start of a new chapter of your life has never made sense to me, and obviously NGirl is of the same opinion.

And the other part of this good news posting is that NGirl and WGuy confided to us last Christmas that they also want to find their own piece of land in our area of the Western Cape.  They want to travel the eco-route from the start of their lives together, reducing their impact on this planet through utilizing solar power, becoming self-sustainable and building a home using as many eco-friendly methods as are available in this country.
One of the potential sites for the start
of their new lives together
Whoopeee!  I reckon that our aim to illustrate to our children and grandson, that an eco-friendlier lifestyle is not that drastic a change and provides for a comfortable lifestyle, has achieved its’ goal.  The fact they are choosing that path for their new life together as a family is the greatest compliment that RMan and I could ever have asked for.

So, apart from the very important question which is to be put to RMan, they also want to spend the rest of the weekend viewing land in the area.  They are hoping to move back down to the Western Cape in June / July this year.

I am so incredibly happy for, and proud of, my children.

Postscript:  I think it is more than time for a name change.  From here on out NGirl will be known as DD (Dear Daughter) - it doesn't seem right to call a married woman NGirl :)

  9. That is beyond exciting for you Dani - especially as they are looking for land near you!! It will be a fabulous journey to have as an extended family. Right now our 16 year old son thinks we are mad doing what we do. I'm hoping that one day, he'll see things differently and come to value to life that we are working hard to create. You are very blessed.

  11. Congratulations on your daughter's engagement! Her ring is lovely. And it sounds like they have sensible heads on their shoulders. That will last them far longer than the memory of a fancy wedding. Very excited for you!

Exactly - a fancy wedding is just that - a fancy wedding. But, taking care of your futures - well, that's a whole other deck of cards ;)
